2026-27 NBA Preview: Eastern Conference Playoff Predictions

With the 2026-27 NBA season finally just one day away from tipoff, it’s officially time to unveil Ballislife’s official preseason playoff predictions starting with the Eastern Conference. Will the New York Knicks return to the NBA Finals after their incredible championship run last season, or will Jaylen Brown and LeBron James be enough to bring Philadelphia back to glory?

Better yet, could this be the year Cade Cunningham and the Pistons break through and make the NBA Finals? Or will it be the Toronto Raptors or Miami Heat who emerge with their respective prized offseason acquisition? And you can never count out the Boston Celtics, who are always in the mix for a Conference Finals berth. One thing’s for certain, the Eastern Conference is going to be a lot of fun this year.

Predicted Eastern Conference Standings

  • (1) New York Knicks 56-26
  • (2) Detroit Pistons 53-29
  • (3) Philadelphia 76ers 51-31
  • (4) Toronto Raptors 50-32
  • (5) Miami Heat 48-34
  • (6) Cleveland Cavaliers 48-34

Play-In

  • (7) Boston Celtics 46-36
  • (8) Orlando Magic 43-39
  • (9) Charlotte Hornets 42-40
  • (10) Atlanta Hawks 41-41

Lottery

  • (11) Indiana Pacers 40-42
  • (12) Chicago Bulls 37-45
  • (13) Washington Wizards 33-49
  • (14) Milwaukee Bucks 26-56
  • (15) Brooklyn Nets 22-60

Play-In

(7) Boston Celtics def. (8) Orlando Magic (Celtics advance as No. 7 seed)

I’ve never been a fan of the NBA Play-In tournament, but its biggest downside is the fact that worthy No. 7 seeds have to fight for their playoff lives against bad teams so the league can rake in some extra TV dollars. It’s especially unfair in a season like 2026-27, where there are seven really firm playoff contenders alongside a handful of teams you can’t really trust to do much.

Anyway, the point of this is that the Celtics will be unjustly relegated to the Play-In after winning nearly 50 games because of the conference’s top heaviness. The silver lining is that their extensive playoff experience will come in handy, and they’ll advance past Orlando in this round with relative ease.

(10) Atlanta Hawks def. (9) Charlotte Hornets (Hawks face Magic, Hornets eliminated)

While I expect a decent win regression for the Hawks in the regular season, the defensive upside they possess makes them a legitimate threat against most teams in the East in either a one- or seven-game scenario.

Adding Lu Dort to a lineup that already included the game’s most disruptive perimeter defender in Dyson Daniels is a reinforcement that will prove crucial for the Hawks as they reach the postseason, and the emergence of Jalen Johnson and Nickeil Alexander Walker as 20-point-per-game scorers gives the Hawks strong upside on both ends.

(10) Atlanta Hawks def. (8) Orlando Magic (Hawks advance as No. 8 seed, Magic eliminated)

Let’s get weird. The Play-In tournament usually claims at least one unjust victim per year and we’ve already established it won’t be the Celtics. Unfortunately, the Orlando Magic are a perfect candidate. Although Paolo Banchero is typically a playoff riser, he’s too inconsistent to truly trust against a team that’s as imposing defensively as the Hawks have the potential to be.

The Magic advanced as the No. 7 seed with a win over the Hawks last season, but this time the Hawks get the better of the Magic and advance to the playoffs despite entering as the No. 10 (!) seed.

First Round

(1) New York Knicks def. (8) Atlanta Hawks, 4-1

In a rematch of the Knicks’ longest series of their 2026 NBA Finals run, it’ll take Jalen Brunson and company one less game to end the scrappy Hawks’ postseason run. The Knicks will enter this series with the confidence of a team that knows it can run the table regardless of what it does in the regular season.

I also expect a much smoother regular season in New York, so I feel pretty confident in the fact that it won’t take the Knicks falling behind 2-1 in the series to lock in for the rest of the playoffs. I’m sure the East will put up a better fight overall than it did last year, and someone may even get the better of the Knicks eventually, but it won’t be the Hawks.

(4) Toronto Raptors def. (5) Miami Heat, 4-3

This matchup has so much potential that it feels wrong being in the first round, but the strength of the Eastern Conference this season means that some teams are going to get thrown right into the fire. As tempting as it is to pick Giannis Antetokounmpo, especially now that he’s with an organization with Miami’s pedigree, the reality is neither of those parties have been all that successful in the postseason as of late.

The Raptors, on the other hand, truly looked to be a team on the rise last season and have the makeup of a team that can make a serious playoff run, especially with the re-addition of franchise legend Kawhi Leonard into a system that’s already proven potent. It really isn’t that far off from what Kawhi joined in 2019 in terms of potential, the supporting cast is just much younger and it looks a bit different on the court in terms of playstyle.

(3) Philadelphia 76ers def. (6) Cleveland Cavaliers, 4-2

This scenario sets up perfectly for the Cleveland Cavaliers to be the team that ends LeBron James’ NBA career if he were to retire after this season, but that’s currently about as uncertain as I am about Cleveland’s chances to seriously threaten Philly in this series.

The Cavaliers seem to have maxed out this roster’s potential in terms of what it can achieve both record-wise and in the postseason, and the 76ers proved they have a core with the potential to win in the playoffs even before they added a bona fide superstar in Jaylen Brown and one of the game’s greatest players ever in James. This series goes six, but I don’t think it ever really gets to a point where the 76ers moving on is in doubt.

(7) Boston Celtics def. (2) Detroit Pistons, 4-3

My heart wants to say that this is the year the Pistons finally get over their postseason woes and break through to the Eastern Conference Finals, but my mind is telling me otherwise. A big part of the Celtics’ dreadful early exit last season, aside from having to work Tatum back in the lineup, was the fact that the team’s depth was absolutely depleted by the end of the season.

Adding Mitchell Robinson bolsters a team that was already among the league’s most relentless on the defensive end, and Paul George is a steadying veteran presence even if his powers aren’t quite what they used to be. Plus, Joe Mazzulla has proven he walks onto any battlefield without so much as batting an eye. For as tough as they can be, I haven’t seen the same resolve out of the Pistons. Celtics in 7.

Added bonus? The Celtics and Pistons square off in the first game of the NBA’s regular season on Tuesday, so we get to see how these squads match up right off the bat.

Second Round

(1) New York Knicks def. (4) Toronto Raptors, 4-3

This series is going to be one of those series that surprises people with how competitive and entertaining it is throughout, especially with how the Raptors match up with the Knicks on both ends of the floor now that you add Kawhi Leonard’s skill set into a system where it can be utilized in its purest form.

Still, the experience and yes, confidence, that the Knicks gained during their galvanizing championship run last season gives them the edge over a Raptors team that still has a few growing experiences to go through before becoming a true championship contender. Leonard’s presence expedites that and it raises the ceiling of this matchup, but it ultimately won’t be enough to knock off the defending champs.

(3) Philadelphia 76ers def. (7) Boston Celtics, 4-2

Let me break out the vision board for this one.

It’s Game 6 in the TD Garden, 76ers down 1, five or so seconds remaining. Jaylen Brown, who has been on the receiving end of the notorious Boston fanbase for what’s been going on for two long weeks, calls for isolation on Jayson Tatum, who just switched over to guard his former teammate knowing the stakes of this final possession. A stop sends the series back to Philly for a decisive Game 7, a bucket sends the 76ers to the Eastern Conference Finals and Brown’s ex-Celtics teammates packing.

Crossover. Splash.

The 76ers win and advance, LeBron and teammates rejoice with the man of the hour and the Boston crowd is so speechless upon exit that you could hear a pin drop on the concourse. How’s that?

The Knicks’ run through the playoffs last season was so dominant that it instantly drew comparisons to some of the greatest championship teams we’ve ever seen assembled, even if the personnel and the regular season record didn’t quite tell the same story.

While I do believe this run will also end in at least a Finals berth for the Knicks, it’s going to take a lot more to get through and it’s going to truly test the organization’s mettle. When they get to the NBA Finals to face whichever Western powerhouse emerges, they won’t be as well rested and prepared as they were going up against San Antonio last season.

For the 76ers, this is about the time of the postseason where I’d expect for LeBron’s age and Joel Embiid’s injury history to start catching up. Brown, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe will have to carry a bit more than they did in previous series, and I think this is where the Knicks’ depth and experience take them over the edge and bring them back to the NBA Finals.
