Eric Trump watched a cable news segment about his father and decided he needed to answer for him.
Headlines have been running wild for weeks about President Donald Trump and his administration. Rumors place him and a young aide in an increasingly scrutinized relationship.
Eric blindly rushed to his father’s defense. But instead of putting the rumors to rest, his explanation may have given them even more oxygen.

That aide, Natalie Harp, has faced intense attention over her unusually close proximity to the president. Speculation has only grown as she continues to appear near Trump at public events.
Inside the West Wing, staffers reportedly call her the “human printer,” a nickname earned by handing Trump physical documents of news articles and social media posts throughout the day.
On Wednesday, Aug. 19, Trump’s son posted a four-part response to X calling out an interview from Harp’s estranged brother, Preston Harp.
After watching Preston expose his sister’s “unhealthy obsession” and answer questions about her closeness to Trump, Eric called it “absolute trash.”
He additionally praised Natalie Harp at length and closed with a shot at the network.
Defending Harp, the Trump Organization executive vice president called Harp an “incredible young woman” and “arguably one of the hardest-working people in the White House.”
Eric didn’t stop at defending Harp. He also took a jab at her brother’s appearance and the outlet he spoke with.
“She’s deeply committed to my father, to her job, and to this country. From the looks of it, she got all the family genetics,” he continued. @CNN continues to be a joke.”
Harp has served as executive assistant to Trump since 2025, though she’s been in his orbit far longer. She spoke at the 2020 Republican National Convention and later joined his campaign advisory board.
Harp’s estranged brother was asked about his sister during an interview with “OutFront” Tuesday night.
Earlier that day, CNN profiled Harp and detailed an alleged October 2023 incident before Trump’s New York court appearance.
When staff realized there was no seat for her, Harp reportedly insisted Trump had asked her to come. After a heated lobby confrontation, she allegedly climbed into an SUV’s trunk and rode there. Two sources recounted the episode, and CNN obtained a photo that reportedly confirms it.
Asked about the trunk, he laughed and said he hadn’t known about it. He said, “It’s actually kind of sad. That’s obsession. That’s, like, an unhealthy obsession with someone, if you’re going to jump into the trunk of their car.”
The clip spread rapidly overnight. Social media users argued that Eric had disputed the framing without contesting a single detail in the reporting.
The replies ignored the insult and went after the real issue. “Can’t help but notice you deny nothing that has been said,” one user wrote. Another sarcastic comment read, “She’s deeply committed to my father” is an incredible way to dismiss mistress allegations lol”
Suspicion grew that Eric was trying to stay on his dad’s good but many noticed, “You are definitely triggered. That’s telling.” Some even wondered why Trump hasn’t spoken up about Harp.
“I think Eric’s jealous someone else is gonna take over as the dumbest Trump. Don’t worry Eric…your position is safe. You still top clown,” one person blasted.
Eric’s comment also dragged his father’s complicated history of infidelity back into the conversation.
Critics quickly pointed to Trump’s past marriages and alleged affairs, arguing that his defense of Harp opened the door to an uncomfortable reminder of his own family history.
“Your dad CHEATED on your MOM (Ivanka Trump) with your younger sister’s mom (Marla Maples) and then cheated on your sister’s mom with your younger brother’s mom (Melania Trump)… and then cheated on your younger brother’s mom.”
None of it has slowed the story down, though.
The Trump family’s instinct to personally manage its own image keeps producing the opposite result. The same thing that happened when a staged family photo drew scrutiny for what people spotted in the background.
Eric shared an altered image of his father with the two children he shares with wife, Lara Trump. He was accused of portraying his dad as a “family man,” but instead the actual reporting stood.
The latest Harp controversy follows a comment from Sen. Jon Ossoff at an Atlanta rally. He alleged that Trump doesn’t want the job as president and would rather build his ballroom and travel with Harp.
The New York Times separately surfaced letters Harp wrote to Trump. In one, after being caught running alongside his golf cart in Scotland, she apologized for being an embarrassment, as cited by New Republic. Another simply said, “With all my heart, Natalie,” at the end.
In another attempt to change the Harp conversation, first lady Melania reappeared after nearly 36 days away from Trump.
