June’s Tunnel ‘Fits we can’t stop thinking about

Welcome back to our monthly roundup, where we dissect and provide context for some of our favorite looks worn by some of the world’s best athletes. In June, we saw good fits in and out of the tunnel, like Rickea Jackson’s business-like short suit, F1 Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton at the F1 movie premiere, Coco Gauff showing off her hard-earned trophy at the French Open, and another good Louis Vuitton piece from Tyrese Haliburton.

So, let’s get into it. Keep scrolling to see the looks that caught our eye this month, and be sure to check back next month for more. In the order of our favorites, we present:

Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton attends the world premiere of F1 on June 16 in New York.

Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton is really him. He wore a custom Dior blush-colored, single-breasted jacket, black pants, and black shoes to the premiere of the movie he produced about the sport he continues to dominate. And to cement that point, he wore a diamond-encrusted goat brooch. Now, Lewis’ astrological sign is Capricorn, which is often associated with a goat, but I’d like to think he’s just reminding us of the facts.

Olivia Nelson-Ododa

Olivia Nelson-Ododa of the Connecticut Sun arrives at the arena before a game against the Chicago Sky on June 15 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Connecticut Suns center Olivia Nelson-Ododa turned the tunnel into her own personal 1920s boudoir with this fun but sensual feather-trimmed sheer robe worn over a matching feather bandeau top and mini skirt. It’s a lot of look and she’s got the height and swag, er, rizz rather, to pull this off without the pieces feeling costume-y all together.

Angel Reese

Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky arrives at the arena before a game against the Indiana Fever on June 7 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

And speaking of a 1920s femme fatale, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese showed up to take on the Indiana Fever in a black fur hat, a black trench coat with fur trim on the lapel and sleeves. Still, it’s the hint of thigh peeking out of the belted trench and the thigh-high, two-tone crocodile print boots that is a chef’s kiss. The black sunglasses? The bracelets over the black opera-length gloves? Yeah, she’s exactly who she thinks she is.

Rickea Jackson

Rickea Jackson of the Los Angeles Sparks arrives at the arena before a game against the Dallas Wings on June 6 at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.

Los Angeles Sparks forward Rickea Jackson is leaning into the tunnel fits with her super-femme offerings, like this cropped belted trench worn with matching shorts. The platform knee-high boots toughen up the look while the simplicity of the tennis necklace she’s wearing adds a nice hint of shine. It’s almost like she’s method dressing. She means business, and she looks it.

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff poses with the Suzanne Lenglen Cup after winning the Roland Garros French Open tennis tournament at the Place de la Concorde in Paris on June 8.

Fresh off winning the Roland Garros French Open tennis tournament, Olympian Coco Gauff showed off her trophy in head-to-toe Miu Miu, featuring a cropped white button-down shirt, a caramel-colored pleated suede miniskirt, and a version of the brand’s blouson jacket, accompanied by frilly foldover socks and sneakers. The ‘fit is a visual representation of why Miu Miu is such a good fit for Gauff: whimsical, feminine, but with a strong point of view or reference.

Lexie Brown

Lexie Brown of the Seattle Storm arrives at the arena before a game against the Las Vegas Aces on June 1 at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.

When Seattle Storm guard Lexie Brown arrived to take on the Las Vegas Aces this month, and I mean this in the best possible way, she was channeling an early-aughts video girl with her long-sleeved mini shirtdress, thigh-high boots, and Gucci bag. But it’s the square sunglasses and the wide, asymmetrical belt that lend themselves to that aesthetic. The perfect way to reference a time without being too literal.

James Johnson

James Johnson of the Indiana Pacers arrives at the arena before Game 5 on June 16 at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.

If you are seeing Beyoncé at one of the last Cowboy Carter concert stops and don’t have your outfit yet, allow Indiana Pacers forward James Johnson to provide some sartorial inspiration with his Game 5 tunnel ‘fit. The bright, color-blocked, cropped short-sleeved shirt paired nicely with the wide-leg pressed, creased pants and cheetah print cowboy boots. It’s an ideal way to channel the energy of the album and the tour without losing your sense of style.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Rapper Lil Yachty (left) and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (right) after Game 5 of the NBA Finals on June 16 at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.

There are two things we know Oklahoma City Thunder point guard doesn’t play about: holding that baby’s head up and wearing fuzzy, furry textured things. We have seen this man wear fur, bags, and boots, and this sweater is the latest addition to his style. The shirt and tie underneath are a fun take on suiting, too. It’s nice to see a man who recognizes that true style isn’t gendered. Wear what you want, people!

Tyrese Haliburton

Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton arrives at the arena before Game 5 of the NBA Finals on June 16 at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.

Another day, another Louis Vuitton sighting on Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton. This time at Game 5 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, we saw him carry a Cotteville Wavy briefcase. Vigil Abloh designed the piece for the brand’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection, and I’d like to say he, too, was method dressing, showing he meant business. However, it seems he prefers arm candy in the form of a bag. And, same.

Sydney Colson

Sydney Colson of the Indiana Fever arrives at the arena before a game on June 3 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Indiana Fever guard Sydney Colson is a good example of how your clothing can showcase your personality. Her tunnel ‘fits have been visually stimulating and sometimes silly, like this patchwork denim two-piece set. The chunky boots add a tough edge to the pieces, and the blue tint on her glasses is subtle yet chic.
