LAS VEGAS – If you didn’t know already, Ballislife’s “All In” event at The Orleans Arena on Friday, July 10th is the dawn of a new era for the 1 v. 1 streetball space that has gained so much momentum in recent years.

Last month, Ballislife officially unveiled the One on One Championship with the intention of centralizing the sport while providing a legitimate championship structure with things like weight classes, rankings and expanded storytelling. In a way, it will be a bit like boxing with how things are structured and even how they are promoted and a bit like professional wrestling with how storylines are built and carried over from event to event.

One of Ballislife’s biggest 1 v. 1 stars, Uncle Skoob, recently shared his thoughts on the creation of the One on One Championship and even credited it as being a potential watershed moment for the sport that we’ll look back on years from now.

“I think It’s going to be a big step in the next direction,” Skoob said. “You don’t want it to be a thing where it’s just hot for a moment, and then it just dies out, you know what I mean? I feel like this is the start of something that could be talked about in 10, 15 years, where now it’s like a professional league. It is kind of like boxing, you know, it has that structure, and I think it’s on the verge of being that.”

Making Weight

That structure, which the formation of weight classes is a big part of, is something that has been missing in the sport of 1 v. 1 during its rise. Because of how different body types and playstyles affect 1 v. 1, there has to be some sort of distinction that separates small guards, big guards, and frontcourt players.

Bijan Johnson is someone who has made a rapid rise in the space this past year, adding multiple names to a graveyard that will surely include some more top competitors in the upcoming months. He’s a perfect candidate to quickly skyrocket up the rankings and win a championship belt in his weight class, which certainly would further cement him as one of the faces of the sport.

“I think you need things like weight classes, because I don’t think you can have, for example, a guy like Beano playing a Left Hand Dom kind of guy,” Bijan said “You’ve got to kind of separate heights and weights a little bit, those have got to come into consideration for sure … It just looks like it’ll just keep on growing. It’s not really going to stop anytime soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if this would be an Olympic sport in the next 40 years.”

The Evolution

The One on One Championship may have just recently been unveiled, but the structure behind it is something that Ballislife has been integrating into our 1 v. 1 events for a minute now. Because of the way we approach the sport and encourage true competition, it opens the door for professional players like Archie Goodwin to join the fold, who may have avoided the sport before because of the sometimes overphysical nature.

“I’ve been watching for a long time,” Goodwin said. “At first, I didn’t see it getting as far, simply because of how the physicality kind of overrules the essence of basketball sometimes. I think that sometimes when that happens, it kind of pushes away pro guys from wanting to play because it just doesn’t seem like real basketball in their eyes. As the rules have gotten better, with better refereeing and then better caliber players, obviously I think that you get a better brand of basketball than you normally would get. I think that’s what you’re starting to see now.”

Regardless, whether you like to watch a big guard such as Nasir Core, a small guard such as Left Hand Dom, or a current professional such as Goodwin, the One on One Championship will have it all. And it all starts at “All In”, this Friday, July 10, at The Orleans Arena.
