On Tuesday, Ballislife made the unfortunate announcement that Uncle Skoob would be unable to compete at Redemption in Detroit this weekend due to a medical emergency. Skoob is already on the road to recovery and will be back doing what he does in no time, but safety is paramount in everything we do in basketball and in life, so risking his wellbeing this weekend wasn’t something he nor anyone else was willing to do.
Because of that, Ballislife has been making moves to line up the next best matchup for the 1v1 scene. From the fans watching the stream at home to the folks live in person with us at Renaissance High School this upcoming weekend, there’s a certain standard for these matchups that everyone knows we have to live up to. And when finding an opponent for someone as unstoppable as Rob Colon, you have to make sure you come back with a certified bucket getter.
Suffice to say, we got one. Walt Lemon Jr., welcome to Redemption.
Walt’s resume
We know Walt’s credentials in collegiate and professional hoops can’t be questioned, from being a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference member at Bradley to earning All-NBA G-League honors in 2018. But Walt earned this matchup against Rob because of what he achieved in the 1v1 scene at Off The Dribble Summer Jam 2 last month, stunning Zae and ending his torrid hot streak with a 30-28 victory that sent shockwaves through the space.

Before Walt’s upset, Zae was considered by many to be the true pound-for-pound king of the sport. Some even argued his position ahead of Nas. I mean, he was the last one to defeat Nas in recorded competition after all. If Walt can repeat what he did against Zae and again shock the world by taking Rob out on short notice, then what can anyone in the scene really say? Could you really deny Walt from whatever matchup he wants at that point? Most importantly, does Walt automatically become a top contender for the Ballsilife One on One Championship?
Opportunity Presented
It’s admirable Walt is even taking this matchup on short notice with just a few days to get himself right and prepare. Especially knowing the kind of talent that Rob is. But Walt has also proven that he doesn’t need a whole training camp or specialized workout regimen to do what he’s always done, which is hoop. If there’s anyone in that gym on Saturday who has the utmost confidence in that, it’s himself.
The beauty of the 1v1 space and sports in general is that sometimes the butterfly effect is real, and opportunities present themselves that never would have seemed possible not long before. Walt wasn’t supposed to be on this card, he wasn’t supposed to get this matchup against Rob. Not on this stage, not this early. But he is. And if he wins? He might just be on pace to be the next big thing in this game.
