It’s clear the folks at 2K intended to make a statement with this year’s release of NBA 2K27, introducing a long list of additions and features that make it the among the most expansive mainstream sports games released in the ninth console generation.
While this year’s edition of the flagship basketball title may not have reinvented the wheel in terms of gameplay and graphics, the risks 2K did take in development this year have proven largely successful.
The ProPlay engine adds a level of realism and authenticity to player move sets that hasn’t existed in past versions of the game and players within the game truly do operate more like the real-life versions of themselves. The dunk meter, which I was skeptical about before playing, is actually a reasonably decent addition and is certainly not as challenging to get down as many players feared before release.
Defense is also noticeably improved in this year’s game, with a more advanced shot coverage mechanism that allows players to challenge different shots in different ways. The AI has also taken a substantial step up this year and simulation gameplay is more satisfying as a whole because of it.
Fire & Concrete
2K has become known for its cinematic MyCareer experiences. For better or worse, this year’s story is the most expansive in the game’s history. The mode starts in Sacramento at the 2023 California High School State Basketball Championships, where MyPlayer’s fictional San Sebastian Prep is taking on another fictional school called Arroyo Vista. Trailing at halftime, the coach implores MP to talk to his team at halftime before MP carries the team to victory in the second half (if you lose this game on any difficulty, that’s an issue).
After the game, the Duke-bound protagonist is given the keys to a brand new sports car from a very grateful San Sebastian booster. The game then transports to an anime-esque cutscene depicting a car accident, which leaves MP unable to walk with fractured vertebrae in his back. After the reality of the situation sets in, the timeline jumps to 2026, where MP is now living on the couch of his Cousin Cam (played by Vince Staples) in Brooklyn while attempting to revive his basketball career.
MP first gets back onto the court for a quick run at Rucker Park, where he’s invited to participate in the 24th annual Rucker Park Fun Tournament the next week by his teammate. He also gets initiated with a rival during this run, who also ends up being the “Final Boss,'” so to speak, in the Fun Run championship game (if you don’t lose before that point).
From Rucker To The G
At the Fun Run, G-League scouts for the Sioux Falls SkyForce and Delaware Blue Coats are present and eventually start trying to one-up each other to sign MP as he moves through the tournament. At the end of the tournament, MP is linked up with an agent who presents him with contract options from both teams. The SkyForce are centered around their star point guard while the Blue Coats are centered around their hyped big man.
Also appearing upon MP’s entry to the G-League is a draft projection tracker, which actually matters this year because there’s no fixed draft position and a player could plausibly be drafted anywhere. MP’s performance is pivotal in determining where he gets selected in the 2026 NBA Draft Unlike last year, you can change the difficulty in the story mode to make it a bit more competitive.
You also have the option of starting the 11-chapter story at Chapter Six, which coincides with MP’s NBA debut. While the story mode is entertaining and worth playing through at least once, it’s definitely lengthy and takes a handful of sessions to fully complete.
MyCareer Eras
MyCareer Eras immediately became one of the game’s most anticipated new features when it was introduced at Community Day. From an operational standpoint, it isn’t that much different from past editions of regular MyCareer, though it starts at MP’s NBA Debut and comes with a seemingly unchangeable backstory. The game lists MP as being a second round pick in the starting year’s NBA Draft out of Division II HBCU Albany State. That isn’t entirely unheard of in NBA history (the school has three NBA alumni) but it does seem like a mostly random decision in lieu of allowing players to pick their own former college.
Regardless of that nitpick, the mode is by and large a success. The mode’s achievement model, so to speak, revolves around a list of era-specific moments that are basically just the standard marks, milestones and records achieved by players during that time. One example in the Kobe Bryant era is topping Donyell Marshall’s 12 three-pointers against the 76ers in 2005 Another is getting 19 rebounds against the Charlotte Bobcats because LeBron James did that once in 2010.
The default visual setting for the mode has era filters enabled like its MyNBA counterpart, but the setting can thankfully be turned off in-game on the pause menu. I know a lot of people are fans of the era specific visuals, but I personally prefer the crisp modern visuals while letting my own head canon make up for the rest. All in all, the mode is a great addition to the game, though there’s still a lot of potential to improve the mode in coming years.
The W
The W mode, which features WNBA gameplay, is largely the same as it has been in past years, although the player models are noticeably improved and there are more scanned players throughout the game in general. One major addition to the mode is a dedicated MyPlayer builder, which allows players to create more specific skillsets as opposed to just selecting from a list of archetypes like the past.
Unlike MyCareer, however, the points you allocate in the builder are actually your current ratings as opposed to your capped ratings. Therefore, instead of building to 99 overall, you instead build to 85 overall and achieve upgrades through your performance on the court. You can also build a female MyPlayer for The City but that’s a separate deal and isn’t usable in the W mode.
The mode is still fun to play for what it’s worth, but the introduction of female MyPlayers into The City makes you wonder just how far 2K could take a legitimate WNBA MyCareer mode. It seems like that would be a win-win in terms of both exposure for the league and the amount of hype it’s currently drawing, as it will allow 2K’s primarily male audience to become more casually invested in its talents. That point aside, it’s clear 2K is putting real effort into building the women’s side of the game and I wouldn’t be too surprised to see those developments come to fruition in the coming years.
MyNBA
Like MyCareer, the additions to MyNBA that were revealed at Community Day got the hype train rolling. That mode wasn’t available to play on the early build of the game we got to play at Intuit Dome that afternoon, but my experience with the mode during the Early Access period has been largely satisfying.
The 100-Year MyNBA Legacy Mode is among the more intriguing franchise mode options I’ve seen in a modern sports gaming title to date. Massive updates to roster control and league management/operations only add on to the gap it holds in the “Best Sports Franchise Mode” arms race.
MyNBA Eras is also back in “NBA 2K27,” so you can still do your best Jerry Buss impression or bypass the VC grind with a Player Lock. The one disappointment I had was that Legacy Mode and Eras mode can’t be intertwined, meaning you can only start the Legacy Mode from the modern day and go from there.
The addition of historic draft playlists is also a nice touch, as it allows players to get as deep into either fantasy or realism as they want to in terms of how the history of their league progresses. You can re-insert James and the 2003 NBA Draft class into the league in 2047 or you can finally answer the question about whether he or Michael Jordan would have dominated the era had they shared it.
The Final Verdict
All in all, “NBA 2K27” is a success for 2K and a refreshing update for sports gamers who have probably become a little bit too used to stale titles being released year-in and year-out. When the game was revealed at Community Day, I said it has the potential to be the best sports game we’ve seen in this console generation and is at the very least the deepest of the mainstream titles.
While I think it ultimately falls a bit short of being the groundbreaking revelation it could have been in totality with these added features, it’s still the best sports game of the year in my opinion and is a real step forward in an era of sports gaming that has been largely forgettable.
I do believe “NBA 2K27” is a game we’ll look back on as somewhat of a watershed moment for sports games in the ninth console generation, in large part because it was the first of the mainstream titles to truly give its players what they wanted in terms of added features and game modes. The developers of the “Maddens” and “MLB The Shows” of the world are going to have to get back to the drawing board and actually start introducing new modes and substantial changes, and I believe they will because of the pressure that 2K has put on the sports gaming market with “NBA 2K27’s” additions.
