2026 WNBA Finals: Game 1 Ratings Prove to Be a Dream

The 2026 WNBA Finals debuted with a bang both on and off the court.

Game 1 proved to be fun for both NBC and viewers of its 2026 WNBA Finals coverage.

The network touted a victorious return to Finals coverage on Wednesday, announcing an average “Total Audience Delivery” of 2.1 million viewers for the debut game between the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries on linear NBC and its streaming platform Peacock. Total Audience Delivery (TAD) factors in both linear and streaming numbers and was introduced by NBC during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Such an audience made Game 1 the most-watched WNBA Finals debut since the championship series flipped to a series format in 1998, besting the 1.9 million who took in Las Vegas and Phoenix’s opener last postseason.

The reveal of the most tuned-in market was hardly shocking, as the Valkyries’ domain of San Francisco put up a 4.49 rating in its WNBA Finals debut. New Orleans (no doubt keeping up with the Atlanta antics of former LSU star Angel Reese) placed second at 3.04 while Richmond (2.12), Hartford/New Haven (2.07), and San Antonio (2.06) rounded out the top five before Atlanta came in at 2.02.

Good Neighbors

While Georgian eyes were likely torn between the Dream and a University of Georgia football game on Saturday (which saw the top-ranked Bulldogs drop a narrow upset loss to Auburn), they’ll be focused on the hardwood come Game 3 on Wednesday night (8 p.m. ET, USA/CNBC/Peacock).

Per Colin Salao of Front Office Sports, Georgians backed the call to fill State Farm Arena after an impromptu move from the cozy Gateway Center at College Park.

The Dream, which has enjoyed an uptick in popularity amidst its title run, had staged its postseason showings at spacious State Farm, the home of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, but seemed destined to go back to the 3,500-seat Gateway Center. A Sombr concert and a Hawks game were respectively scheduled at the larger facility on Thursday and Saturday, the original dates of Games 3 and 4 of the Finals.

A Game 3 move from Thursday to Wednesday sent the Dream to their past and future home and fans responded in tune: Salao’s report states that all of the 17,000-plus State Farm seats will be filled as Atlanta seeks a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven set. Game 4 of the series will also be staged at State Farm, albeit with an adjusted 1 p.m. ET tipoff to accommodate the Hawks’ home opener against the Houston Rockets.

W for the W?

Time will tell if the Finals will be able to carry the early momentum but the league is likely enthused by the early returns.

Some critics believed that eyes would drift away with popular teams like the Indiana Fever, Las Vegas Aces, and New York Liberty all removed from the postseason bracket before the Finals tipped off. Instead, the league appears to be building on the work it put up during its landmark 30th season, one where over 90 millions viewers were said to have tuned into the action.

“This has been the most successful season in the history of our league by many metrics,” WNBA commissioner emeritus Cathy Engelbert noted in her pre-Finals address over the weekend. “In the first year of our new media agreements, we reached more than 90 million unique viewers. That was just a U.S. number; it doesn’t include Canada and outside the U.S. Fans watched more than 320 million hours of WNBA basketball. We had 51 telecasts average at least 1 million viewers, compared with just 19 last season.

“We averaged a record 11,500 fans per game, and almost two-thirds of our regular-season games were sellouts. Our social and digital platforms also experienced tremendous engagement, generating more than four billion viewers, up 28% from last season. I never thought I’d be standing up here talking in billions at the W, but we’re there. Most importantly, the basketball itself was spectacular.”
