Jay-Z has had a busy year, starting with his March headlining set at The Roots Picnic.
The rap mogul took over his hometown last summer, selling out three nights at Yankee Stadium on his JAY-Z30 Tour. The run celebrated the 30th anniversary of “Reasonable Doubt” and the 25th anniversary of “The Blueprint.”
He continued the anniversary series with a blazing showcase in Los Angeles Friday night, Oct. 23.

The rap veteran performed hits including “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” “Run This Town,” “Hard Knock Life” and “Empire State of Mind.” His 14-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, showcased her piano skills while performing songs including “The Story of O.J.” and “Dead Presidents.”
He even honored Nipsey Hussle during “Hard Knock Life” before closing the show with DJ Khaled and John Legend performing “God Did.”
But amid the celebration, Jay-Z stayed silent on another conversation brewing around his name.
A report claiming the Roc Nation founder will perform at the halftime show has caught the attention of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who responded with surprise to the news.
The speculation adds another twist to the conversation surrounding this year’s highly anticipated halftime performance.
According to an Oct. 20 report from Puck, Jay-Z reportedly has chosen himself as the next headliner for the Super Bowl halftime show.
This follows a prediction from fellow New York rapper Cam’ron, who hinted weeks earlier that Jay-Z would be the headliner.
On a Sept. 26 episode of his podcast “Come And Talk 2 Me,” he looked at the camera skeptically and said, “So n—s can’t find nobody to do the Super Bowl?”
He listed Jay-Z’s accomplishments this year, including the massive Yankee Stadium takeover and the three additional sold-out nights in Europe.
Cam’ron said, “Come on, Jay. We can see you, n—a. Gon’ ahead and do that.” He joked that the fellow New Yorker has probably been preparing for this for years.
“You not doing nothing by accident. You are one of them n—a. This has been going on for three years,” he said.
But the NFL commissioner’s response makes this discovery even more interesting.
Roger Goodell gave a coy response to the claim that Jay-Z is the headliner, leaving the door open that someone else may still be performing.
He told Front Office Sports in an Oct. 21 article, “I am not aware of a leak. I’ve been in the committee meetings. So I’m not sure it’s a leak. We haven’t announced anything. Until we do, we won’t make any comment on that.”
In response to Goodell’s response, one X user said, “That wasn’t ‘no.’ lmfaoooo.”
Another said, “It’s not a no in my head. I was thinking that since he had shows this weekend at the stadium that he was gonna announce it himself but the news leaked before he could do it himself and I could be so far off, but that makes sense to me also him doing it makes the most sense anyways.”
Since starting his partnership with the NFL in 2019, a major part of Jay-Z’s role as the organization’s live music entertainment strategist has been to consult on their entertainment. This includes the popular halftime show.
Meanwhile, Colin Kaepernick remained unsigned. Critics accused the rapper of aligning with the league that sidelined Kaepernick after his national anthem protests against racial injustice and police brutality.
Not to mention, Jay-Z’s comment that “we’ve moved past kneeling” lit a fire under many who questioned his intent. His deal left others wondering whether he helped the NFL more than the cause.
Therefore, the irony of him possibly headlining the Super Bowl was not missed by social media users calling it “a conflict of interest.”
One person who hasn’t been happy with the last few halftime shows wrote, “The NFL needs to fire Jay-Z’s company. They give us sh—y halftime shows.”
The Brooklyn native has served as the NFL’s entertainment consultant for years, bringing Rihanna, Usher, Dr. Dre, The Weeknd, Shakira, and Jennifer Lopez to the main stage.
A more enthusiastic person said Jay would be the “Best pick in recent Super Bowl history.”
But former NFL player T.J. Houshmandzadeh disagrees. He rejected the idea that people want to see the Brooklyn emcee perform at the Super Bowl.
“Nobody want to see Jay-Z be the halftime performer. Like, they don’t. Like … the Super Bowl ain’t in New York. It’s in L.A.,” he said on the “Speakeasy” podcast.
Houshmandzahdeh suggested Jay-Z should get a native Los Angeles artist connected to the community to perform.
He also said the “Tom Ford” rapper could hire a “collection of international performers” if he wants to increase the audience internationally.
Just last month, reports said Jay-Z and his entertainment empire, Roc Nation, were struggling to find a Super Bowl halftime performer for 2027.
This stems from recent political controversy involving the league. Last year’s performer, Bad Bunny, was attacked online by President Donald Trump and MAGA supporters. They took issue with him performing in Spanish, calling out Trump, and promoting unity.
As a result, Jay-Z was rumored to be having difficulty choosing the next Super Bowl performer.
Whispers suggested they were considering both Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, though that was never confirmed.
The official headliner for the Super Bowl LXI on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2027, has yet to be announced.
Rumors suggest Jay-Z may do so at his next Jay-Z30 Tour show on Oct. 24 at SoFi Stadium, the same stadium hosting the upcoming Super Bowl.
