Almost everyone remembers how the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show ended for Janet Jackson.

Far fewer remember who else was standing on that stage before it all went sideways. For Jackson, those final seconds swallowed everything else about the night.

The “Rhythm Nation” icon spent years paying for a moment that wasn’t hers alone, while the industry that once crowned her quietly turned its back.

But Jackson wasn’t the only star in Houston that evening.

Five other famous faces shared that spotlight, and where their lives have gone over the past 22 years tells a very different story than the one she was forced to live.

Not every one of those stories has a happy ending. The show was produced by MTV and aired on CBS during Super Bowl XXXVIII on Feb. 1, 2004. The lineup read like a “TRL” countdown.

Jessica Simpson kicked things off, P. Diddy ran through “Bad Boy for Life,” Nelly brought out “Hot in Herre,” and Kid Rock stormed out wearing an American flag fashioned into a poncho.

Then came Justin Timberlake, Jackson’s surprise guest, for the closing number, “Rock Your Body.” As the song wrapped, he tore away part of her bustier and exposed her breast on live TV. He called it a “wardrobe malfunction.” The phrase stuck, and so did the consequences, mostly for her.

Jackson’s music was reportedly pulled from radio and music channels. She was pushed out of the Grammys a week later, while Timberlake was allowed to perform after apologizing. She has never returned to the halftime stage.

The rest of the acts? Their paths went in directions nobody watching in 2004 could have predicted, and one of them now wakes up in a federal prison.

That would be Diddy. The mogul who strutted through “Bad Boy for Life” is serving a 50-month federal sentence. As previously reported, a jury convicted him in 2025 on two prostitution-related Mann Act counts while acquitting him of racketeering and sex trafficking.

Diddy’s early release dreams have been a roller coaster. His projected date has shifted several times, including a delay after a reported stint in solitary confinement at FCI Fort Dix, and he’s since been transferred to FCI Allenwood in Pennsylvania. Federal prison records now project a February 2028 release, per USA Today.

Kid Rock’s flag poncho drew criticism from the Veterans of Foreign Wars back in 2004, but that was just a preview of what he would become.

He’s since become one of Donald Trump’s loudest celebrity cheerleaders. In February, he headlined Turning Point USA’s “All-American Halftime Show,” a conservative counterprogram to Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX and got Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to use his access to ride in a military helicopter.

Nelly has somewhat drifted into that direction, too. After performing at one of Trump’s inaugural balls in 2025, the St. Louis rapper was booked for Kid Rock’s 2026 Rock the Country festival, which critics branded a “MAGA” tour. Offstage, he married Ashanti in 2023, and the couple welcomed son Kareem in 2024.

Simpson, who opened the Super Bowl that year by shouting “Houston, choose to party!” turned her reality TV fame into a fashion empire. She split from her husband of 10 years, Nick Lachey, the following year in 2005. She married and divorced her second husband, Eric Johnson, in January 2025. Then, in October, she was photographed with boyfriend Thomas Eisenhood for the first time.

And Timberlake? He returned to headline the Super Bowl solo in 2018. But his public apology to Jackson and Britney Spears didn’t come until 2021. Rumors of marital issues between him and his wife, Jessica Biel, have ran wild for years with no confirmation.

They got worse after Timberlake was arrested in June 2024 for DWI in Sag Harbor, New York. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser driving offense.

Now he’s reportedly preparing to tell his side again in a four-part “tell-all” docuseries for Apple TV in December, Variety reported. One source claims Jackson appears to discuss that night.

The contrast hasn’t been lost on fans. “And still the punishment didn’t fit the crime,” one person wrote on X. Another added, “22 years and justin still acting like he wasn’t on that stage.”

“It’s always been obvious that it was planned,” a third chimed in. A fourth predicted the docuseries “is going to bring the whole controversy back into the conversation,” noting that Jackson “was the one who carried most of the public backlash.”

At least one person from that night is already talking. Wayne Scot Lukas, Jackson’s longtime fashion designer, said on “TMZ Live” that he wasn’t asked to take part in Timberlake’s series.

Lukas insisted the outfit didn’t malfunction at all. He claimed the original plan was to reveal Jackson’s backside, but it switched to her breast days before the show, and producers failed to cut away as planned.

Lukas made similar claims in 2021, when he said Timberlake originally wanted a different body part exposed.

Jackson, who has long called the incident an accident, has acknowledged that whether she wants to be part of that conversation or not, she is.

Come December, she may finally join it on her own terms.
