Vice President JD Vance appeared to be taking over baby duty when the second family touched down in Alaska. His wife, Usha Vance, had one less thing to juggle as they made their way off Air Force Two.
It was a switch for the parents after their long trip west. This time, their youngest was in Dad’s arms.

Cameras caught the vice president walking down the stairs while carrying their 9-week-old son, Alec, against his shoulder.
The second lady was already heading down the stairs with their 4-year-old daughter, Mirabel.
Vance reached toward Alec’s head and adjusted the baby before taking the first few steps. He kept one hand near Alec’s head and neck as he descended.
Usha wore a long beige coat and dark sunglasses. She turned back toward her husband and baby with a serious, watchful expression. Then she continued down the stairs with Mirabel.
But the seemingly sweet switch-up did not earn JD the parenting points some might have expected. Viewers quickly focused on what Alec was wearing.
The baby appeared to have on only a light-colored, long-sleeved sleeper. There was no visible hat, coat, hood, or blanket. The chilly Alaska air hit his exposed head and neck.
The sleeper appeared to be standard indoor sleepwear rather than insulated cold-weather clothing.
Meanwhile, the adults dressed for colder temperatures. Usha had on her long coat. JD wore a button-down shirt with a dark vest.
Temperatures in Fairbanks were hovering in the 30s during the family’s trip, while Anchorage saw temperatures ranging from the upper 30s into the 40s and 50s.
Social media users had plenty to say. “Better wrap that baby in a blanket. Wth,” wrote one alarmed social media user.
“That baby is not wrapped up nearly warm enough. Look at the clothes all the adults are wearing and it’s head isn’t even covered,” a second person complained.
Another critic questioned carrying Alec down the stairs: “Baby is too young to be carried down those steps. Put the baby in a car seat. And then we’ll talk good father.”
One commenter offered another explanation for why JD had Alec this time: “Because MOTHER almost took a header getting off of Marine Force One.”
That comment pointed back to a frightening moment just one day earlier.
Usha had Alec strapped to her chest in a baby carrier as she emerged from Marine Two at Joint Base Andrews. While coming down the stairs, she suddenly stumbled forward and nearly fell.
The mom of four grabbed the railing and regained her footing before hitting the ground. Alec remained safely secured against her chest. Several uniformed military personnel stood nearby but remained at attention as she recovered.
JD came out of the helicopter afterward with Mirabel. The moment immediately raised questions about why nobody had reached out to help Usha.
The family was headed to Alaska as JD campaigned for Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. The vice president revealed that politics was not the only reason Usha and some of the children made the lengthy trip.
Alec Neel Vance is the couple’s fourth child. He joins Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4. JD and Usha announced Alec’s arrival earlier this year. They said mother and baby were “happy and healthy.” Their older children, they added, were “overjoyed to meet their little brother.”
The Alaska arrival could have changed the conversation after Usha’s frightening stumble. JD had taken over baby duty and carefully carried Alec down the stairs himself.
Instead, the internet found a new problem.
Dad had the baby this time. Critics just wanted the baby bundled up, too.
