Vice President JD Vance may have thought he was winning husband of the year with his latest tribute to wife Usha Vance.

The vice president turned what should have been a sweet moment into another public embarrassment for the Vances.

And one line left critics wondering whether he wants a partner or someone who simply follows orders.

The confession has only added to the growing criticism of how Vance treats his wife in public and in private.

The 42-year-old Republican has spent months defending his marriage against critics who question everything from his treatment of Usha to their awkward public appearances.

VP’s own words are giving those same critics fresh ammunition, revealing more about his expectations than his appreciation for Usha.

During a Friday interview with Raymond Arroyo on “Arroyo Grande,” Vance was asked to name the person he admires most. He replied immediately: “My wife.”

At first, the father of four appeared to be offering a heartfelt compliment.

“Because she’s an amazing mother. She manages to create this sort of cocoon of normalcy around our kids where they’re just able to be kids, and that is not easy, in the life that we lead that is not easy,” Vance explained.

But things quickly went sideways when he revealed exactly what he appreciates about Usha’s sacrifices.

“It requires a lot of sacrifice for her but she just does it. She doesn’t complain, she doesn’t criticize, she just says, ‘This is my job.’ She does it amazingly well and she does it with a lot of grace and beauty,” he continued.

The remarks were apparently intended as praise, but critics heard something entirely different.

For them, Vance sounded less impressed by his wife’s accomplishments than by her willingness to remain quiet.

“So basically she’s your slave, and you’re happy with that, because she doesn’t ‘complain’ or ‘criticize.’ Just absolute grossness,” one X user wrote. Another added, “You missed the part about her pausing her rising career to be second fiddle.”

Usha, a Yale-educated attorney and former Supreme Court clerk, stepped away from her successful legal career as her husband climbed the political ladder.

This is hardly the first time Vance has answered uncomfortable questions about how he treats his wife.

Earlier this month, Usha nearly tumbled down the steps of Marine Two while carrying their newborn son, Alec, against her chest. She managed to grab a railing before falling, but footage of the frightening moment quickly spread online.

Vance emerged afterward carrying one of their daughters, prompting viewers to question why his wife appeared to be navigating the steps without his assistance.

The incident followed an earlier trip to Hungary, where cameras captured Vance rushing up the stairs of Air Force Two while his then-pregnant wife trailed behind. He eventually turned around and waited for her.

“I’ve seen her in photos next to you and nine times out of ten she looks miserable. 11 days,” one critic commented.

The scrutiny has even spilled into political battles.

In September, Vance’s mother, Beverly Vance Aikins, threatened to punch Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed after claiming he’d made disparaging comments about Usha and the couple’s children with a social media post that said, “So do we think JD is taking Usha with him back in time to meet Papaw, or no.”

The Egyptian-American Senate candidate had gone to X to return fire after the vice president invoked his grandfather as he told an Ohio rally audience, “I’d love to go back in time and tell my Papaw that there is a man who claims to stand for working people — who says not only should we have sharia law, but if you criticize it, you’re a white supremacist.”

Meanwhile, Usha recently admitted she initially had reservations about welcoming their fourth child in July. She later told Fox News Digital that expanding their family had made their household even happier.

Yet Vance’s latest remarks have only intensified the criticism.

“Any woman who has to deal with your lack of compassion and fake Christianity and has your children has a place in heaven already. You are a disgusting human being,” another X user wrote.

One person interpreting Vance’s comments wrote: “So she’s a nanny and a housekeeper you don’t love. nice.”

A third person was completely disgusted that the second lady was dismissed as the help. “My God you are pathetic,” one person said to Vance.

“That is her job, as a mother. And as Second Lady she doesn’t have to grocery shop, cook, clean, wash clothes, schedule anything. Not sure that’s worth the price of living in the fishbowl, but she’s got lots of help,” the person wrote.

Vance wanted the world to know how much he admires his wife. Instead, his rivals are asking why her refusal to complain seems to be the quality he values most.
