A rap rivalry that has simmered for nearly a decade just crashed into Zohran Mamdani‘s face, and the line everyone is replaying didn’t come from a rapper at all.

It started with a fiery social media post from a Queens-raised superstar who has spent the past year firmly in Donald Trump’s corner, a loyalty she’s kept even after the president made her the punchline at a White House dinner over the summer.

Days after she joined Trump on the campaign trail, where he made a crude remark about her backside in front of thousands, she turned her fire on a sitting Democrat with Election Day closing in.

Her words were harsh enough that reporters couldn’t stop asking about them. When the question finally landed at the podium of one New York leader, he could barely get through it with a straight face.

Then he did something her fans are still chewing on. He skipped right past her and showered praise on the one woman she’d least like to hear celebrated.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was asked about Nicki Minaj going after Gov. Kathy Hochul, and instead of firing back at the “Super Bass” rapper, he turned the spotlight on her longtime rival, Cardi B.

The exchange happened during a sanitation press conference on Oct. 29. A reporter began by noting that Minaj had “sort of tore into” Hochul, and Mamdani cut in with a grin before the question was even finished. “Can you believe that’s a sentence?” he asked.

The mayor, who once dabbled in rap himself under the name Mr. Cardamom, said it was hard to believe the whole thing was even real. Then he pivoted straight to Cardi, telling reporters the city “loves and appreciates Cardi B,” according to CBS New York. He credited the Bronx rapper for her music, her love of history and her passion for the politics that shaped the city.

The drama kicked off a day earlier, when Minaj went after Hochul in an X post that has since pulled in more than 3 million views. “Kathy Hochul is an evil woman,” she wrote, adding that the governor “will not escape God’s wrath” and that Democrats should give up her seat.

She didn’t stop there. In follow-up posts, Minaj resurfaced Hochul’s 2024 claim that young Black kids in the Bronx didn’t know the word “computer,” a remark the governor apologized for at the time, and urged Black and Christian voters to back Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman, per SoapCentral.

Hochul didn’t let it slide. She suggested Minaj “stop going to Trump rallies,” as seen in a post shared on X, and a day later, when asked whether she’d welcome a Cardi B endorsement, she said anyone who wants to support her is welcome to. She also reminded reporters that Minaj once backed her when she ran for lieutenant governor, adding, “You can ask her how she’s been poisoned by Donald Trump.”

Brooklyn Councilman Chi Ossé even took to social media to publicly plead with Cardi to endorse Hochul.

Online, plenty of people loved how Mamdani handled the moment. “That was a very classy response,” one person wrote. Another said the mayor’s “comedic timing is absolutely impeccable,” while a third jokingly crowned him a “Cardi B historian and scholar.”

Even some Barbz admitted he played it smart. “I’m so happy he kept it cute because the Barbz were about to get up,” one fan wrote.

Others weren’t surprised by the pivot at all. “Even in politics, they only care to mention Cardi when it has to do with Nicki,” one user pointed out.

This isn’t the first time Mamdani has picked a side. Back in April, shortly after Cardi signed on to judge a jingle contest promoting his free 2-K child care program, the mayor was asked to choose between the two rappers in a Sidetalk NYC interview. He answered “Cardi B” without hesitation, per HotNewHipHop.

The love goes both ways. In a clip that went viral in July, Cardi called Mamdani “so sweet” and “amazing,” insisting he “really do wanna make a difference.”

Minaj, meanwhile, has made a habit of going toe-to-toe with Democratic governors. Last December, she spent days trolling California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who took a slick shot at her using Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss.”

Her latest attack also dragged Hochul’s Bronx comment back into the spotlight, the same remark that had 50 Cent checking the governor when it first made headlines two years ago.

Whether any of it moves voters will be clear soon enough. New Yorkers head to the polls on Nov. 3, and all eyes are on whether Cardi will step into the fight.
