President Donald Trump did not need an argument, a microphone or even a badly timed comment to send social media into detective mode.
His son Eric Trump was most recently at his father’s White House state dinner, joined by First Lady Melania, to welcome Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan.
Eric captured the scene on his phone, but the angle shows he and his wife, Lara Trump, sat far from the family. The distance added another awkward moment between father and son.
One tiny hand gesture said it all for social media users.
Cameras caught one exchange between the father and son that lasted only seconds, but viewers studied it like evidence in a family court case.
Video circulating online from the Sept. 12 golf outing captured Trump and Eric in another uncomfortable father-son moment in Ireland.
They attended the Amgen Irish Open, held at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, County Clare.
In the RTÉ News footage, the president wears a white cap, white shirt, and dark blazer. Eric stands beside him in a dark jacket and rests one hand on the railing.
Then came the split-second that launched a thousand theories.
Trump slides his right hand toward Eric’s hand and appears to make brief contact.
Eric quickly leans away and folds his arms as his father points off-camera, prompting a faint smile across his face. The clip had no audio, leaving viewers to dissect the exchange for themselves.
Nothing proves Eric was upset or intentionally rejecting his father. Still, that didn’t stop X users from treating the moment like a missing scene from the latest saga of Trump family drama.
“Eric moved his hand when Trump moved his hand closer. Eric doesn’t want sh—y britches touching him,” one person tweeted. Another noticed, “He kind of looks disgusted, like he didn’t want his Dad’s hand near his, to be honest..
Others noticed when Eric pushed his father’s arm away, as well as when he “removes his hand from the railing as Trump’s hand gets closer.”
One person joked, “I think he’s thinking ‘did I inherit those tiny hands? Eww mine are kind of small too, let me fold my arms.’”
The heightened scrutiny arrives as Eric juggles several family controversies and business ventures.
Following Donald Trump Jr.’s May wedding in the Bahamas, Eric’s spokesperson insisted he did not know the Russian businessman who helped fund the wedding afterparty.
Don Jr. and his wife Bettina Anderson called Kremlev a “dear friend,” but no photos show him with Eric at the roughly 50-person wedding celebration.
Critics still questioned how one brother’s generous friend could remain a complete mystery to the other.
Eric also recently tried to promote his father’s attempt to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America.”
He posed in a bright red hat carrying the proposed name, apparently hoping to score a few points with his father. Internet pranksters instead edited the hat with mocking slogans, while Canadian officials rejected the rebranding.
The moment reminded everyone that Eric’s public displays of support for his father do not always land as intended.
Even a casual day at the golf course can become an unwanted body-language seminar when cameras are nearby.
Meanwhile, Eric joined the flashy launch of Trump Tower Tbilisi in the former Soviet republic of Georgia via video link.
The Real Deal reported that the launch party featured dancers and an elaborate drone display to promote the planned 62-story luxury condominium tower, which will become that nation’s tallest building and anchor a $2 billion development.
The Trump Organization is licensing its name for the project instead of investing its own equity. The venture arrives as Georgia’s growing economy attracts international developers and luxury buyers.
That is a lot of family business competing for attention. Yet viewers remained fascinated by one hand quietly leaving a railing and a father and son seemingly falling out.
Trump skipped Don Jr.’s wedding, but his appearances alongside his children are becoming more frequent.
In addition to his first wife Ivana’s kids, Don Jr., Eric, and Ivanka, Trump also shares Barron Trump with Melania and Tiffany Trump with his ex-wife, Marla Maples.
