Donald Trump has spent the better part of a year treating the White House like a job site, and the invoices keep landing in rooms the taxpayers will never walk through.
The renovations for the ballroom, which remains under construction, made all the recent headlines. Meanwhile, the East Wing got another wrecking ball.
Every one of those fights played out in daylight, on camera, with the president holding up renderings like a developer.
But the newest line item on Trump’s ledger is different. It’s small, it’s underground, and it’s attached to a room almost no American is ever allowed to enter.
Once the paperwork surfaced, the dollar figure stopped being the interesting part.
Trump had every reason to feel untouchable Monday, Aug. 31. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that Trump’s $400 million ballroom can move forward as the lawsuit continues.
Chief Justice John Roberts called the project “likely unlawful” in dissent.
Trump said America was in a “Golden Age” earlier this year” and the ballroom one of Washington’s greatest buildings.
Hours later, quieter documents revealed the Trump playground had a much bigger problem.
And the price tag for Trump’s playground came into focus in public contract records reviewed by Politico’s West Wing Playbook: nearly $253,000.
The General Services Administration, operating under the Executive Office of the President, awarded the contract on July 28 to alter the lighting in bowling alley.
The two-lane Harry S. Truman Bowling Alley sit in the basement of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, reserved for White House aides and their guests.
The alley was built in 1947 as a 63rd birthday present for Truman, paid for by friends back in Missouri. They installed it in the West Wing before moving it in 1955.
Richard Nixon later had a separate single lane put in beneath the White House itself in 1969.
The White House is spending $250,000 on its bowling alley.

The receipts didn’t stop at the lights. On Aug. 18, GSA gave the same contractor $8,800 for “escort services,” walking outside workers through secure areas.
That same day, the agency handed the identical company a separate $878,000 contract for an “EEOB basement studio project.” The listing offered no further detail. The bowling alley happens to sit in that basement.
The contractor is Charles Mann Enterprises, a Washington-based firm founded by former NFL defensive end Charles Mann, a four-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time Super Bowl champion with Washington.
The company is registered federally as a minority-owned, woman-owned small business, a designation this administration has spent 19 months attacking everywhere else. Online, nobody was buying it, though.
“Why? Trump will never use it,” one person wrote on on X. “In 2014, Obama wanted to repair the bowling alley. Republicans blocked funding for it. Now they’re fine with it because Trump isn’t black and intelligent,” another shared.
One user wanted proof of concept. “If we’re footing the bill for that too, I wanna see 47 bowl. Like he’s in the PBA. Hop to grandpa. Let’s see that hook,” they wrote.
Another was just learning the room existed. “The White House has a bowling alley! Where have I been for the past 51 years!?!” they tweeted.
And one commenter called the potential Trump branding early: “SERIOUSLY, THIS IS REAL. I couldn’t tell if it was satire. Nixon put in the bowling alley, Trump renovated it in 2019, and now he is renovating it again. This s—t needs to end.”
Meanwhile, a White House official told the Irish Star that the work was routine. The renovation was described as “standard modifications and repairs to the Bowling Alley, such as fixing broken light fixtures,” adding that the space has hosted nearly 10,000 outside guests over the past year and that the president himself was not involved.
The reason this one cuts is history. In 2014, GSA proposed rebuilding the same lanes under Barack Obama, calling them “irreparable.” Republicans erupted.
The project was dead roughly shortly after Time first broke the story. Then-RNC chair Reince Priebus mocked Obama’s priorities online, and the GOP-controlled House passed an amendment barring federal money from touching it.
Rep. Pat Meehan, who introduced the measure, compared the renovation to ice cream, saying it was a “want,” not a “need.”
Twelve years later, the same party has said essentially nothing about what Trump’s doing.
First lady Melania Trump oversaw a full restoration of the alley during her husband’s first term, including the original wooden lanes and updated lighting.
The Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America covered that one, not taxpayers.

The East Wing also once held Melania’s second-floor office which as demolished for the ballroom in October 2025.
The pattern is familiar territory for this White House, though, which recently pulled a Kehinde Wiley painting off an embassy wall.
Wiley, a visual aritst, had previously painted the official portrait of Obama titled President Barack Obama back in 2018.
